MUMBAI: President APJ Abdul Kalam on Tuesday said that education institutions should build the capacities of research and enquiry, innovation, use of high technology, as well as entrepreneurial and moral leadership, reports Our Bureau. He was speaking at a function to mark the 150th year of the Bombay University.
The President also exhorted political parties in the country to devote more time to “developmental politics” rather than concentrating on winning elections. “Political parties should be 30% political and 70% developmental. But in our country it is just the opposite. They should concentrate on making India a developed nation by ’20,” he said in reply to a question by a student.
When asked as to how corruption could be rooted out of the system, the President said, “If you think there is too much corruption, you (the youth) should get rid of it. Will power is needed to root out corruption.”
He congratulated the university for the unique initiative of connecting Calcutta and Madras universities via wireless technology. The President also felicitated some eminent citizens including Mukesh Ambani, RK Laxman, Deepak Parekh and Hariprasad Chaurasia on the occasion. Maharastra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, state governor SM Krishna and Union HRD minister Arjun Singh were also present on the occasion.
Another interesting question asked was, when the country will get a “set of qualified politicians to run the country.” The president answered, “It is up to the voters to elect qualified and educated people to run the country. Recently the number of educated and well qualified politicians in Lok Sabha has increased.”
