Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Monday said that the BJP-ruled state is ready to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) if the Centre issues a direction in this regard.

The chief minister's statement came a day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said the BJP-led NDA governments in 21 states will introduce the UCC before 2029. The next Lok Sabha polls are scheduled to be held in that year.

"We read the matter in the media. If the Central government issues any direction, we will definitely implement the UCC. So far as I know, this may not be implemented in the state's tribal areas," he said in a press conference.

The UCC will establish a common legal framework to govern marriage, divorce, succession and live-in relationships irrespective of religion.

Saha said the state government is set to launch a month-long programme beginning on September 17 to mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 25 years in public service as the Chief Minister and Prime Minister.

"Since the model code of conduct is in force due to the elections of Village Committees of Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), the month-long programme will gain pace from September 29, a day after polling," he said.

Saha said several programmes highlighting the achievements of the Prime Minister for the public welfare will be carried out across the state during the month-long programme.

"A monitoring committee headed by Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy has been constituted to oversee the implementation of the 12-point progamme from city to schools and anganwadi centres", he said.

Saha added that all ministers, MLAs and other public representatives will join the progammes.
