Voters in long queues, polling peaceful in Tripura

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress are looking to root out the CPI-M, which has been ruling the state for the past 25 years.

Tripura elections: Voting for 59 assembly seats underway
Amidst tight security, Tripura assembly poll witnessed voters’ turnout of 78.56 percent. Still there is queues outside several polling booths.

Polling were by and large peaceful and incident free. Tripura Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sriram Taranikanti told ET, “Till 9pm the voting percentage is around 78.56 percent. However there is long queues in several areas. Traditionally Tripura has a history of huge polling so we are hopeful that this time to the voting percentage will be higher.”

In 2013 the state has witnessed the voters’ turnout of 93.26 percent.


Early in the day there was slow polling in several polling stations as there was technical snag in the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) attached with VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail) in over 150 polling stations.

A bomb was recovered in the Agartala town. On Saturday night house of a booth president of BJP in Sonamura was set ablaze.

A total of 292 candidates, including 23 women are in fray. Chief Minister, Manik Sarkar exercised his franchise in Agartala while BJP president Biplab Deb cast ballot in Udaipur.

The state has 3174 polling stations and voting was held for 59 out of the 60 member assembly. Polling to Charilam constituency was deferred following the death of CPI-M) candidate Ramendra Narayan Debbarma. The constituency will go to polls on March 12.
