Tripura' new chief minister Manik Saha is likely to contest from Town Bordowali constituency. Political parties in Tripura have geared up for June 23 by election to four constituencies.

This is expected to be litmus test for parties ahead of next year's assembly polls. By-polls would be held in Agartala, Town Bordowali, Surma and Jubarajnagar assembly constituencies, which were lying vacant after the resignation of three BJP MLAs and death of CPI-M legislator Ramendra Chandra Debnath.

On May 15 Tripura BJP President Manik Saha was sworn-in as the 12th Chief Minister of the state. The BJP, along with ally Indigenous People's Front of Tripura routed the Left Front in Tripura in 2018. In the 60-member Tripura Assembly, the BJP won 36 seats and the IPFT eight, while the CPI-M, secured 16 seats.


Following dissension BJP replaced Biplab kumar Deb with Manik Saha as the chief minister. Saha is Rajya sabha MP from the state.

A senior BJP leader who do not want to be named told ET, " Saha will contest Town Bordowali seat for he has to get elected within six months to assembly. "

CPI(M) and Congress are not likely to forge any alliance and will contest the seats on their own.

CPI-M state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury said that party would not forge any alliance with any other party in the by-elections.

Political observers stated that three seats including Town Bordowali, Surma and Jubarajnagar (SC) assembly constituencies is expected to witness multi cornered contest.

The last date of withdrawal of nomination is June 9. The votes would be counted on June 26.
