Tripura Indigenous Party meets home minister to press for National Register of Citizens

GUWAHATI: Union home minister Rajnath Singh has assured that the government will look into the demand of implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Tripura, Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhawl, president of Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT), said on Friday.

“We met Rajnath Singh with our demand of implementation of NRC in Tripura,” Hrangkhawl told ET. “Singh has assured that NRC of 1951 is updated in Assam and the government will consider if the same can be implemented in Tripura.”

The Union home ministry, however, clarified that no assurance of any kind was given by the minister regarding the implementation of NRC in Tripura. “It is categorically asserted that no decision has been taken on the issue of NRC in Tripura,” A Bharat Bhushan Babu, spokesperson of the ministry, tweeted.


He confirmed that Singh had met a delegation of INPT on Thursday. “However, no assurance of any kind was given by the union home minister regarding implementation of NRC in the state of Tripura,” Babu said.

Hrangkhawl said Tripura needed NRC because indigenous people have reduced to minority in the state. “The state has faced immigration from Bangladesh and we need NRC to ascertain as to why indigenous people of the state were reduced to minority,” he said.

INPT is a partner of in BJP-led government in Tripura.

Assam government had published the final draft of NRC with names of 28,983,677 people on July 30. Around 4,007,707 people could not make it to this final draft. The process of filing claims and objection is currently underway, and will continue till November 23.
