The CPM, which ruled Tripura for almost two decades continuously before the BJP wrested power in the state in 2018, is now exploring to be part of a broader anti-BJP alliance in the state for the assembly elections due in March.

After the AICC in-charge of Tripura, Ajoy Kumar, and CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury held talks in Delhi on Sunday in this regard, Yechury along with Prakash Karat attended the Tripura CPM state committee meeting till late Tuesday night to formally firm up the state party's alliance pitch.

On the other hand, AICC general secretary Mukul Wasnik and Kumar are scheduled to hold meetings with the Tripura Congress leaders in Agartala on Wednesday to firm up their party's alliance pitch. One section of the Tripura Congress is learnt to be preferring an alliance with the TIPRA Motha, led by Pradyot Manikya Deb Burma.

The Congress and the CPM, it is learnt, also made some efforts to woo the TIPRA Motha but the latter was reportedly resisting it, as of now. The Trinamool Congress, another emerging player in Tripura, has made it clear that it will have nothing to do with any front that comprises CPM thus making it clear that it would be at least a three-cornered contest.
