Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress government on Monday moved a resolution in the West Bengal assembly, opposing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which is currently under consideration by the joint parliamentary committee.

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said that one particular religious community has been targeted by the Centre through the bill. She asserted that the bill will not be passed in Parliament as the party that brings a bill needs a two-thirds majority to pass it. "Will BJP be able to pass this bill in Parliament as it lacks a two-thirds majority," she said.

Speaking in the assembly during a debate on the resolution, Banerjee alleged that the Centre had bypassed state governments over the matter and did not consult anyone. The CM also pointed out that the Waqf (Amendment) Bill will take away rights of a particular community. "Tirupati Balaji, Amritsar Golden Temple, Belur Math and Ramakrishna Mission have huge properties. Will it be possible to touch these properties? Waqf is donated property," Banerjee said on the floor of the House.

"JPC has been formed following the initiatives of Trinamool. BJP's target is to pass the bill by the budget session," Banerjee said.
