KOLKATA: A local leader of the ruling Trinamool Congress was shot dead in Baguihati area near here this morning, police said.

Sanjay Roy alias Buro, a close associate of state Agriculture Minister Purnendu Basu, was shot by four unknown motorcycle assailants on two bikes at a market place in Jagatpur locality of neighbouring North 24 Parganas district, a senior officer of Bidhannagar Commissionerate said.

"The incident happened at around 9.40 AM when four unknown miscreants on two bikes shot Roy from close range. Though people at the spot tried to catch them, the assailants managed to flee," the officer said.

Roy, was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared brought dead, he added.
