Trinamool, Congress and CPI(M) fail to agree on joint resolution against demonetisation

KOLKATA: Joint movement in Delhi by Trinamool Congress, Congress and CPIM against Narendra Modi's demonetization scheme is sure to suffer a setback in Bengal as the three parties have differed over signing an all-party resolution, which the ruling Trinamool Congress is planning to introduce in the state Assembly. A senior Trinamool Congress leader and party MLA told ET on Wednesday that they were planning to bring a resolution in the state Assembly, the winter session of which will commence on December 2, demanding roll back of the demonetization scheme.

Differences among these three parties over the issue of signing the all-party resolution became clear on Wednesday as the CPIM, Left parties and Congress boycotted the all-party meeting convened by the Assembly speaker Biman Banerjee during the day. The BJP, however, attended the meeting.

The opposition leader and Congress MLA Abdul Mannan said that Trinamool Congress had planned to bring a resolution in the state Assembly demanding roll back of the demonetization scheme and wanted all political parties to sign the same. "Parliamentary affairs minister Partha Chatterjee called me to inform about this decision of the ruling party. I told him that we are not demanding any roll back of the demonetization scheme of the Union government. We are opposing the same because the Centre has failed to supply adequate currency notes in the banks before taking such a serious decision. We want the Centre to supply adequate volume of currency notes so that common people don't suffer further. I have informed Chatterjee that it would not be possible for our party to sign the resolution which they are planning to bring during the winter session," Mannan said on Wednesday.

Congress insiders, on the other hand, indicated that they were planning to bring a no-confidence motion against the ruling Trinamool Congress on the issue of recent child trafficking racket which busted at a private nursing home at Baduria in North 24-Parganas district. The Congress has also planned to corner the ruling party in the state Assembly by raising the issue of Saradha chit fund scam in which many of the Trinamool Congress leaders are reportedly involved.

The Left Front Legislative Party (LFLP) leader and CPIM MLA Sujan Chakraborty also said that they would not support and sign the ruling party resolution which seeks to roll back demonetization.

Even though the three parties held joint demonstration in front of the parliament last week condemning people's sufferings due to demonetization, they differed over signing a resolution in the state Assembly on the same issue.
