Trident expects room occupancy rates to fall by 30 per cent

Trident hotel expects its occupancy rates to fall by about 30 per cent after its reopening following the 26/11 terror strikes.

MUMBAI: EIH Group-owned Trident hotel expects its occupancy rates to fall by about 30 per cent after its reopening on Sunday following the 26/11 terror strikes.

"As per our rough estimates, it looks like there would be a 30 per cent reduction in our hotel's occupancy," Trident Hotel president Rattan Keswani said on the eve of the hotel's reopening.

The Trident, Nariman Point, reopens after three weeks of being shut for restoration works following the terror strikes.

The hotel expects 100 of its 551 rooms to be occupied. "We will have about 100 guest rooms occupied tomorrow. We expect 50-60 per cent of them to be our Indian guests," Keswani said, adding that the luxury establishment was still receiving reservation calls.

"Guest rooms including the executive floors, the restaurants and the meeting rooms will be open for guests from today," he said.

Booking enquiries, however, were not in the same volume as was normally expected during this period, he said.

"Normally, during January, the occupancy rate is about 80-85 per cent at the Trident, while at the Oberoi, it is about 70-75 per cent. As per estimated figures, it seems there would be a 30 per cent dip in occupancy rates this time round," Keswani said.

The Oberoi normally sees an occupancy rate of about 80 per cent during February, while the Trident fares much better at 90 per cent, he said.

March brings along a sort of a slowdown with occupancy rates dipping to 75-78 per cent at Trident and Oberoi managing to clock about 70-72 per cent, Keswani said.
