Transport strike: No impact on normal life in Tami Nadu

CHENNAI: The one-day nationwide strike called by various transport unions against a proposed Central bill did not affect normal life in Tamil Nadu as a majority of vehicles, including government buses were plying, police said today.

Government buses were plying as usual even as a section of private buses, lorries and auto-rickshaws kept off the road, police said.

However, call taxi services were being operated normally, they said.

Incidentally, NDA's southern ally PMK had extended support for today's strike, with the party describing it as a 'black legislation' which would affect various stakeholders in the transport sector.

Central trade unions such as All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), BMS, INTUC, LPF and HMS had made the strike call opposing the NDA government's Road Transport and Safety Bill, 2015.

Unions are opposed to various provisions including obtaining fitness certificates even for light motor vehicles regularly even as they are up in arms against the stringent penalties proposed for road accidents.
