Train lynching case: Hundreds attend ‘Not in my name’ protests in Delhi
NEW DELHI: The ‘Not in my Name’ protest, triggered by the lynching of a 16-year-old on a Mathura-bound train last week, saw hundreds of people gathering at Jantar Mantar in the capital on Wednesday.

Demonstrations were held simultaneously at cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata. The protest was spurred by a Facebook post by Gurgaon-based film-maker Saba Dewan on Saturday, in which she condemned the lynching of the boy, Junaid Khan, who was returning from Delhi after a shopping trip with his brothers two days before Eid.

“I am overwhelmed by the response we got and it feels like there is hope for the likes of us,” Dewan said. In her post on June 25, Dewan had made a call for “doing something about” the killing.

As the post turned viral over the weekend, an image of blood stained slippers and rod with ‘Not in My name’ written on it by graphic artist Orijit Sen became a symbol for the protest. Many protesters were spotted wearing placards around their necks bearing the image.
