Traders not to participate in TN bandh

The Federation of Tamil Nadu Traders Association on Saturday said it would not participate in the October 1 'bandh' called by ruling DMK and its allies to demand early completion of the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project.

CHENNAI: The Federation of Tamil Nadu Traders Association on Saturday said it would not participate in the October 1 'bandh' called by ruling DMK and its allies to demand early completion of the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project.

Federation President T Velliayan, in a statement, said the supporters and opponents of the shutdown had politicised the entire show. "Do not make traders a scapegoat in your struggle," he told political parties.

Though the Federation felt that SSCP was most essential, there was no need for it as political parties did not have any public debate on the hindrances to the project, he said.

Shops should also be considered as essential services like the media and electricity supply and should be exempted from the shutdown, he said.

The federation had decided against participation in shutdowns called by political parties unilaterally without consulting traders, he said.
