Traders breathe easy

Traders in upmarket Hazratganj breathed easy on Friday after the Supreme Court ordered that pre-1965 tenants of Raja Mehmoodabad who have valid tenancy documents will not be evicted.

LUCKNOW: Traders in upmarket Hazratganj breathed easy on Friday after the Supreme Court ordered that pre-1965 tenants of Raja Mehmoodabad who have valid tenancy documents will not be evicted.

‘‘The apex court judgment comes as a great relief to us,’’ said president of Hazratganj Traders Association (HTA) K C Bhambwani.

He pointed out that the order meant a reprieve for establishments such as Royal Cafe, Hotel Capoor, Oriental shop, Manucha furnitures, UCO Bank, as well as 90 per cent of Maulviganj area.

Harish Kapoor, chairman of Janpath Market, also welcomed the order. He, however, expressed disappointment that the relief had not been extended to shopkeepers of Janpath market.

These shopkeepers became tenants post-1965 and got their documents of tenancy from the custodian (appointed by the Government of India).

“A tenant is a tenant after all,” Kapoor pointed out. “These shopkeepers are legal tenants as they have been paying rent to SDM, Sadar, who is the official representative of the custodian,’’ he said.
