Kerala Government has decided to crackdown on slaughter houses causing pollution, state Local Administration Minister Paloli Muhammadkutty said on Wednesday.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Government has decided to crackdown on slaughter houses causing pollution, state Local Administration Minister Paloli Muhammadkutty said on Wednesday.

Replying to a flurry of supplementaries in the state assembly on pollution-control measures, Muhammadkutty said careless disposal of slaughter waste was a major cause of pollution throughout the state.

The rules had been tightened to ensure that proper waste- disposal system was an essential condition for issuing licences to abattoirs.

Dumping of slaughter waste posed a grim threat to rivers, canals and potable water sources in many parts of the state. The officials concerned had been asked to act tough in such cases.

The response to the ban on plastic articles of below 30 micron thickness since last September had been encouraging.

Production, sales and transportation of plastic bags and other articles in the specified category had been made punishable.
