SRINAGAR: Indian troops have shot dead one of the "most wanted" militant commanders in Kashmir during a gun battle that also left nine security force personnel injured, police said on Tuesday.
Abu Sarjeel, alias Khubaib, was killed in the southern district of Pulwama late Monday, said police officer Bashir Khan.
"Khubaib was one of the most wanted militant commanders in Kashmir who was active since 2000," Khan said, adding that he was involved in the killing of more than 30 police and army personnel.
Khubaib, a Pakistani national, was a member of hardline rebel group Jaish-e-Mohammed, police said.
Kashmir is in the grip of a 19-year insurgency against New Delhi's rule that has left more than 43,000 people dead by official count.
Violence has declined since India and Pakistan launched a peace process in 2004 to resolve all pending disputes, including the one on Kashmir -- a scenic region they hold in part but claim in full.
