TOI case: HC orders stay on investigation till June 25
The Gujarat High Court has ordered a stay on police investigations in the cases filed by the City police commissioner O P Mathur against Times of India resident editor and correspondent earlier this month, till June 25.
The newspaper had approached the High Court yesterday seeking to quash the charges against its resident editor Bharat Desai and correspondent Prashant Dayal. The investigation in the case is being done by the state CID (crime) branch.
When the matter came up for hearing today, the public prosecutor requested for more time as he wanted to bring in the advocate general, sources said.
S V Raju, advocate representing TOI, objected to this request saying that this would simply delay hearing in the case.
Raju requested that since the public prosecutor has demanded more time, investigation in the case could be stayed till the proscution was ready for an argument.
Justice H M Devani ordered stay on investigation in the case till the next hearing on June 25.
City police commissioner O P Mathur has filed five FIRs against Desai, Dayal and a photographer, after TOI published a series of reports on him claiming that he had links with former underworld don Abdul Latif.
Dayal and Desai were accused of sedition and criminal conspiracy by Mathur.
The newspaper had earlier filed quashing petition in the High Court, but had withdrawn it saying that they would like to represent the matter first to the Gujarat government.
