KOLKATA: Two persons were killed after crude bombs exploded at the residence of Trinamool Congress’ panchayat member SheIkh Anwar Hussain in Birbhum district. The victims were later identified as Hussain’s brothers.

The incident took place early morning on January 22 at Amodepur in Birbhum. The two-storeyed concrete building owned by Hussain collapsed after the explosion.

The police believes that the brothers were making bombs, which went off and caused the explosion, people familiar with the matter said.

Hussain was not present at his residence at the time of the blast. The victims included Sheikh Hafizul Hussain, who was accused in several criminal cases. Immediately after the incident, a huge police force rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area. Bomb disposal squads too reached the spot.

Union home minister Rajnath Singh had just a day earlier raised the issue of the highest rate of political violence in West Bengal.

“In all other states, ruling and opposing parties are opponents. But in Bengal they are enemies. And that is why the rate of political violence is so high here,” Singh had said.
