KOLKATA: After their consecutive victories in Lok Sabha and civic elections in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress and Congress on Thursday became vocal in the state Assembly and demanded resignation of the Left Front government. The chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee himself was present in the House when the opposition parties demanded resignation of his government.

The opposition leader in the state Assembly and Trinamool Congress MLA, Partha Chatterjee told the House that the people of West Bengal had virtually withdrawn their support to the CPIM-led Left Front government. "After their defeat in the Lok Sabha polls, the CPIM has lost 13 of the 16 municipalities where elections had taken place on last Sunday. Accepting the peoples verdict, the government should step down," Chatterjee said.

Congress MLA Ajoy De brought an adjournment motion saying that the ruling CPIM had lost the peoples support it had so far been enjoying and the government should step down.

The opposition and treasury bench members blamed each other for post-poll violence in different parts of West Bengal. The House witnessed heated exchange of arguments between the two during the morning session.
