Tight security in Meghalaya

Security forces stepped up surveillance in sensitive pockets across Meghalaya in view of a 24-hour bandh call given by the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council which began on Friday evening in the state.

SHILLONG: Security forces stepped up surveillance in sensitive pockets across Meghalaya in view of a 24-hour bandh call given by the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council which began on Friday evening in the state.

The BSF has sealed the Indo-Bangladesh borders to prevent movement of insurgents while security forces put up random check points for frisking people, official sources said.

Special squads equipped with bomb scanner, metal detectors and sniffer dogs were on patrol in sensitive areas to foil any subversive attempt.

The call apparently had an effect on normal life as fewer people ventured outdoors.

The 24-hour shutdown, called by the HNLC, started at 6 pm on Friday.
