Tiger numbers rise to 2,226 in India

According to recent estimates, there are 2,226 tigers in India. This is significantly higher than the estimated population of 1,411 tigers in 2006 and 1,706 in 2010, years of previous population surveys. According to the National Tiger Conservation Authority, the tiger population has responded well to initiatives like intact functioning of ecosystems, reduction of human pressure, protection, availability of prey and so on. The states that have done noticeably well are Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh. There is, however, scope for increasing population in many tiger habitats in Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal, Assam and Jharkhand.
