Tibetan protesters pop up from nowhere

Despite the security net, Tibetan protesters on Tuesday managed to mark their presence.

NEW DELHI: Despite the security net, Tibetan protesters on Tuesday managed to mark their presence just when visiting Chinese president Hu Jintao was in the middle of his engagements here.

Four Tibetan activists were detained outside the high-security Hyderabad House when they made a surprise appearance there as prime minister Manmohan Singh was holding talks with Mr Hu.

Holding their ‘national flag’ and raising anti-China slogans, the activists of the Tibetan Youth Congress reached the venue on the India Gate circle, taking a large number of police personnel deployed there by surprise. Security personnel swung into action immediately and caught hold of the activists and whisked them away in police vehicles.

Apart from this high-point of their protest, Tibetan activists in Delhi have been holding demonstrations for the past two days against Mr Hu’s visit, prompting police to take many of them into preventive custody. Police took six Tibetans into preventive custody on the Kasturba Gandhi Marg on Tuesday morning while they were moving towards Hyderabad House.
