Three missing, thousands displaced after Philippines typhoon

Typhoon Fung-wong left three people missing feared dead and caused widespread floods, landslides and power outages in the northern Philippines over the weekend.

MANILA: Typhoon Fung-wong left three people missing feared dead and caused widespread floods, landslides and power outages in the northern Philippines over the weekend, rescue officials said Monday.

The storm brushed past the northern tip of the main Philippines island of Luzon before slamming Monday into eastern Taiwan.

Floods destroyed two bridges while landslides shut down a key road to the northern mountain resort of Baguio, and the provinces of Abra and Apayao were still without electricity Monday, the civil defence office said.

Three people were missing in the towns of Tuba, Piddig and Pasuquin towns, with the last two suffering extensive flooding that displaced more than 6,000 people.

Schools remained shut across the northern Philippines Monday as authorities assessed the damage to communities in the area, the office said.
