GUWAHATI: Assam���s North Cachar (NC) hills continue to bleed. On Saturday, three people were killed and over 40 houses torched in Phaiding area of the district.

Police sources said that about 7 am on Saturday, unidentified miscreants in a group of about 20, set ablaze houses. The village were houses were torched is inhabited by the Dimasa community. Security personnel have been put on high alert in the district.

District superintendent of police M. Sarma told ET that the district administration has clamped section 144 of CrPc and put the whole district under night curfew.

The trail of violence in the area has affected normal train service as railway men and property were attacked. Recently, on many occasions, security personnel were ambushed. Following a series of attacks, goods train service in the North Cachar Hills section was withdrawn on April 16, 2009. Services were resumed on May 5.

The construction companies engaged in the highway construction in the area has threatened to pull back. Union home ministry has recently asked Assam government to launch a fresh offensive to check the violence.

North Cachar has around 55 companies of central paramilitary forces. Around 30 persons including 12 security force personnel have been killed due to militant strike in the area this year.
