Thousands across Kerala pay homage to ancestors on auspicious Karkidaka Vavu day
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thousands of people across Kerala today paid homage to their ancestors by offering "bali tharpanam" on the auspicious Karkidaka Vavu day at various holy rivers, the seashore and temples.

People thronged "Bali tharpanam" centres from early morning. Temples in the state also witnessed a heavy rush of devotees on the occasion.

In the state capital, special arrangements were made at Sree Parasurama temple at Thiruvalom, Shangumugham beach and nearby Varkala Papanasam beach.

The Periyar river base at Aluwa in Kochi also witnessed a heavy rush of people to offer tharpan.

People believe that departed souls attain "moksha" (liberation) if this ritualistic homage is performed on Karkidaka vavu day on the Malayalam month of Kardidakam.

Elaborate arrangements had been made by police and state authorites for the public to offer bali tharpan.

The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation operated special services on the occasion.

Government has declared a state-wide holiday for its offices and educational institutions today.
