This video shows why accident numbers are high at Indian railway crossings

Over 60 people lost their lives in a train accident in Amritsar recently when a train mowed down people who were watching Ravana effigy burning on railway tracks. The jury is still out on who is to be blamed for the unfortunate incident in Amritsar, but a viral video is doing rounds on social media showing the careless attitude of people who ignored the approaching train while crossing the railway lines.

The twitter video shows how people continuously overlooked the honking train and ignored the gateman and railway employees warnings. The railway employees are seen repeatedly trying to stop people from crossing the line but people were simply not bothered about the approaching train.

However, to prevent any Amritsar-like incident, Railways has instructed train drivers to slow down and guards to take appropriate safety measures on spotting a crowd, but people should also take extra care while crossing the railway line.

According to a National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, nearly six people lose their lives everyday while crossing railway lines in India. Between 2004 and 2015, over 26,000 lives were lost in accidents at railway crossings. Road and rail accidents contribute to the majority chunk of avoidable deaths in India.

Nearly 60 people were killed and 72 injured last week after a crowd of Dussehra revellers that had spilled onto railway tracks while watching burning of Ravana effigy was run over by a train near Amritsar.
