This is a new dawn, Ravi Shankar Prasad on triple talaq verdict
NEW DELHI: Hailing the ruling on triple talaq by the Supreme Court, Union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the verdict marks the “celebration of empowerment of India”. Prasad said that today is a “great moment” as the “vindictive, discriminatory, arbitrary, unreasonable system” of triple talaq has been found to be “unconstitutional” by the apex court.

The minister said the verdict is an indication of a “new emerging India”, making it clear that the Modi government “strongly stands” by the SC verdict, and will not buckle under pressure like Rajiv Gandhi’s government in the past.

“This is a new dawn,” Prasad said, adding, “I am proud of my PM” who had “publicly appealed not to bring in religion” in the issue of triple talaq.

Stating that the SC has held triple talaq as whimsical and unreasonable, Prasad said the verdict should be seen beyond the pale of communal divide since it is an issue of gender justice and equality.

When asked about the stand taken by the Muslim Personal Law Board, Prasad said that he would urge them to “reconsider”.
