The fish, a delicacy, is known as ‘the fish with a heart of gold’. It is a prized fish in some East Asia countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Japan for medicinal properties of its internal organs. Fish's skin contains good source of high-quality collagen that is used for manufacturing of cosmetics and medicines, while its fins are used by pharma companies to manufacture stitches and in wine purification.
The importance of the fish can be assessed from the fact that even a low-grade Ghol fetches around Rs 8000-10,000 per kg.
The fish is found in the Indian and Pacific oceans, along the coasts of the Persian Gulf countries, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Burma, all the way up north to Japan. Again, it is found from Papua New Guinea to northern Australia.
