Third year student beaten to death by TMCP

KOLKATA: Taking the student politics in Bengal to a new low, a third-year college student was allegedly beaten to death today at Sabang in West Midnapore district by the members of TMCP, students wing of the ruling party in Bengal.

The deceased student was identified as Krishnapada Jana, a member of Chattra Parishad, student wing of Congress. The eye witnesses claimed that Jana refused to participate in a programme that was organized by the TMCP to welcome a cabinet minister, Soumen Mahapatra.

The activists purportedly dragged Jana to the college union room and ganged up on Krishnapada Jana. After a scuffle, a group of TMCP youth attacked him with iron rods when he was leaving the college.

The incident happened today at the afternoon at the Sabang Sajanikanta Mahavidyalay. Students supporting the Trinamool Congress and the Congress party had earlier clashed over the issue, said sources.

Reacting to the incident, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today said that she has instructed the police to take strict action against the culprits. "The incident at Sabang is sad and shameful. The police officials have been asked to take strict action," Banerjee told reporters at Nabanna.

State education minister Partha Chatterjee added, "This is an unfortunate incident. I have already spoken to the administration and the principle of the college. Actions would be taken."

Mahapatra, the Water Resources Investigation and Development Minister however said that he was not present in the college at the time of the incident. Meanwhile , the TMCP too has denied their involvement.
