There is no harm in muslims chanting 'Jai Sri Ram': Syed Muminul Aowal

Guwahati: Assam Minorities Development Board (AMDB) chairperson and BJP spokesperson, Syed Muminul Aowal said that there is no harm for Muslims chanting Jai Sri Ram.

Recently in Assam there have been instances when Muslim youths were thrashed by a group of people for refusing to chant Jai Sri Ram. Police even made couple of arrest in this regard.

Aowal said that one must not be forced to say Jai Sri Ram and one must not be prevented by others from saying Jai Sri Ram.


Aowal said, “Ram Chandra is the embodiment of ideal king and the rule of Ram is identified as Ramrajya (ideal kingdom). There is no harm in chanting Jai Sri Ram. No one should prevent a Muslim from chanting Jai Sri Ram.”

He said that there is a section of Muslim leaders who want to say that chanting Jai Sri Ram is unislamic. “These leaders want to create controversy. BJP governments both at the Centre and in the State are working for inclusive development by taking all sections of people along.”

He clarified that he does not support force being used on someone to chant Jai Sri Ram. “ The name of Ram must come from heart and not by force. However Muslim leaders should not prevent someone from the community to chant Jai Sri Ram,” Aowal argued.

He added that Muslims must not be prevented from chanting names of prophets, saints of other religion. “ This is not an offence in Islam. A Muslim can also take the name of Srimanta Sankardev (the 15th century saint-reformer of Assam) as well as Jesus Christ."
