The 'Last Lear' premiere deferred after MNS attack

The premiere of Mr Amitabh Bachchan's latest film 'The Last Lear', scheduled on Wednesday night, was deferred after MNS volunteers attacked a cinema hall.

MUMBAI: Superstar Amitabh Bachchan may be the first casualty of the ongoing tiff between Raj Thackeray and Jaya Bachchan over her anti-Marathi remarks.

The premiere of Mr Bachchans latest film The Last Lear, scheduled on Wednesday night, was deferred after MNS volunteers attacked a cinema hall.

On Wednesday evening, Planman Motion Pictures announced that the event was postponed. PVR Multiplex at Juhu, where the film was to be screened, was allegedly attacked by MNS workers on Wednesday afternoon. The film is scheduled for release on September 12. Its not clear whether the movie will be released in the city. MNS chief Raj Thackeray had called for a ban on films starring the Bachchan family.

Ironically, the development came on the day Mr Bachchan apologised on behalf of his wife. MNS had turned down Ms Bachchans apology on Tuesday. Her statement also angered Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray, a close friend of the Bachchan family.

Mr Bachchan apologised and sought forgiveness on Jayas behalf to placate the Shiv Sena supremo and his estranged nephew Raj. Mumbai and Maharashtra have given us glory and recognition. I am 66 years old and 40 of those years have been spent living in Mumbai. Is it ever possible that we will dishonour it? Never!

He added: If inadvertently this is what has been construed, then we apologise and are sorry and seek forgiveness for any sentiments that have been hurt.

In a veiled attack on Raj Thackeray, who has been targeting him as part of his anti-North Indian tirade, Mr Bachchan said: Just because we remain quiet does not mean that you can label us with guilt and inconsideration.

Mr Bachchan said his wifes remarks did not sound anti-Marathi in any manner and that there is no denigration, but, words have a funny way of being mutilated to suit a particular copy or expression in its interpretation.

The casual off-the-cuff remarks made by her at the music launch function were without malice or deliberate intent, but if it has caused hurt to the sentiments of Maharashtra, Maharashtrians and indeed the city and citizens of Mumbai, then she must seek regret and offer apology. I am pleased and satisfied to read Jaya has on her own spoken to the media on the very same lines, regretted the hurt caused and apologised. I feel grateful and happy, Big B wrote in his blog.

The MNS, on its part, has observed silence and is likely to stick to its original plans.
