The importance of Ayodhya in UP’s political landscape

Ayodhya is turning out to be the epicentre of politics in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the assembly polls as any political developments in this religious town will have its ramifications, not just in Ayodhya, but in Purvanchal and other parts of the state as well.

On Friday, BSP leader Satish Chandra Mishra started his party’s Prabuddh Sammelan from Ayodhya having realised the religious importance of the place for Brahmins. Chants of Jai Shree Ram rent the air during the meeting.

On Sunday, it was the turn of CM Yogi Adityanath to visit Ayodhya to take stock of the development projects. On Monday, UP deputy CM Dinesh Sharma visited Ayodhya to meet government officials and review the development work.


In the last four and a half years, Adityanath visited Ayodhya more than 20 times, which defines the importance the place holds for the BJP. With other parties also trying to cash in on the importance of Ayodhya, it has become vital for any party that wants to win in 2022 to show its presence here.

The BJP government is trying to sho- wcase Ayodhya as the new developed city with an upcoming international airport, world class railway station and several other projects under the Ramayana circuit. In June, the PM himself reviewed the development plan of Ayodhya prepared by the UP government.

Samajwadi Party is not far behind. “After Parliament session, our president Akhilesh Yadav Ji will start his state tour and will come to Ayodhya,” Pawan Pandey, SP leader and former Ayodhya MLA told ET. SP and AAP have been constantly alleging the Ram Temple Trust of wrongful land deals.
