The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena suffered a setback on Monday when its senior leader and former Maharashtra minister Ramdas Kadam announced his resignation from the organisation. Kadam submitted his resignation as a "Shiv Sena leader" in a letter to former Maharashtra chief minister Thackeray.

In the state's BJP-Sena government, Kadam had been the environment minister (2014-19).

When the Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi was in power (from November 2019 to June 2022), he was not granted any ministerial positions and was reportedly upset about it.

Even last year, he was refused reelection to the state Legislative Council.

Eknath Shinde, a Sena MLA, and 39 other lawmakers rebelled against the party last month.

Yogesh Kadam, MLA from Dapoli in the Ratnagiri district and the son of Ramdas Kadam, had also sided with the Shinde campaign.

Shinde was sworn in as chief minister on June 30, and BJP's Devendra Fadnavis signed in as his deputy on the same day.
