MUMBAI: Shiv Sena Executive President Uddhav Thackeray today warned the Maharashtra government over the proposed Jaitapur nuclear power project in the wake of Japan declaring nuclear emergency and closing its atomic power plant following the devastating earthquake.

"Japan had to declare nuclear emergency after the earthquake and tsunami hit the country. But the state government here is preparing to set up a nuclear power plant," Thackeray said while addressing a meeting of people affected by the proposed plant.

Expressing his opposition to the nuclear power project in the Konkan region, Thackeray said he would fight for the locals.

"I want the issue to be solved peacefully. But if anyone (govt) uses force, the protest would be intensified. Unnecessary use of force will not be tolerated," he said.
