Thackeray feels sorry for old pal Bhujbal

MUMBAI: A day after Chhagan Bhujbal made his displeasure known about the state of affairs within his party, the NCP, there is some consolation coming his way from the Shiv Sena.

Sympathising with him for his "neglect" in the NCP, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray has said he (Bhujbal) would have been much better off had he stuck to the Sena.

At a birthday bash last weekend, Mr Bhujbal had apparently voiced his concern, though indirectly, for being “sidelined”. He was upset that the party leaders didn’t stand by him at his difficult hour when he was in the eye of the Telgi storm. The event also saw Mr Bhujbal heaping lavish praise on the Sena patriarch.

An editorial with all the tell-tale signs that appeared in the Sena mouthpiece Saamna headlined "Chhagan, why has this happened to you" summed up the story. The Sena supremo wrote that the Congress first lifted Mr Bhujbal, who was once his protégé, to the sky when it suited its interest and then dumped him when the purpose was served.

The editorial highlighted how Mr Bhujbal, who joined the Congress in 1993 after being in the Shiv Sena for a good 25 years, was being sidelined and neglected by the NCP. "Mr Bhujbal was the Shiv Sena product. Later, Sharad Pawar picked up this ready-made piece, used to his advantage and then left it to rot after his purpose was served," the editorial went on to state. Reminding Mr Bhujbal of history, the Sena chief said “those who ditched the Sena were never happy and their political condition, in fact, had worsened”.

Thackeray Sr recalled how on Mr Bhujbal's 60th birthday, it was BJP leader Gopinath Munde who was present to wish and celebrate while most NCP leaders were conspicuous by their absence. In his inimitable style, he described how Mr Bhujbal, once like a "canon" in the Shiv Sena, has now been reduced to a "water-pistol" in the NCP.
