Textiles industry commits Rs 2.6 crore to PM's Relief Fund

The Textiles industry have committed financial assistance worth Rs 2.6 crore to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund for disaster relief measures.

NEW DELHI: The Textiles industry have committed financial assistance worth Rs 2.6 crore to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund for disaster relief measures in flood-devastated parts of Uttarakhand, Textiles Minister K S Rao today said.

"We had made some discussions and feel that it is our duty to come to the rescue of unfortunate people stuck in many parts of Uttarakhand. So, we had made an appeal to all associations of the Textiles Ministry and I am glad to inform you that they have come out instantly to provide financial assistance to affected people," he said here.

"Various associations, institutions and PSUs under the ministry, including Cotton Corporation of India, Confederation Of Indian Textile Industry, Apparel Export Promotion Council and National Textiles Corporation, have jointly committed assistance of Rs 2.6 crore to the Prime Minister Relief Fund," he said.

"We will also be coming forward with assistance of clothing and shelter to the maximum extent possible," he added.

Besides, Rao said: "We are urging the textiles industry and the country to be more liberal to help the citizens in this distressed hour."

He hoped that the sector will come forward to provide assistance both financial and non-financial.

Also, the officers of the ministry and associate organisations are pledging one day's salary support for the purpose.

Rao, who will be meeting various industry associations in different cities such as Mumbai, Hyderabad and Coimbatore next week, would also ask them to contribute for the cause.

"I will be meeting several industry associations to review the progress of the sector along with challenges faced by it and will also ask them to do their bit for providing support," he said.
