GUWAHATI: Tension is running high in Tinsukia district of Upper Assam following the death of 11 persons.

On Tuesday there was vandalism in Tinsukia town by bandh supporters. In protest against the death of 11 persons , Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association (ATTSA) had called Tinsukia bandh.

A senior police official said that problem started when bandh supporters forced people in the town to shut down shutters. Additional director general of police, R.M Singh has rushed to Tinsukia. Army conducted flag march in the area.

Security force while trying to control the mob on Monday fired in the aired when high voltage cable fell and led to death of 11 persons and injuring 12other. The mob was demanding handing over of five murder accused arrested by the police earlier.

Government of Assam declared ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased in the incident that took place at Pengaree in Tinsukia district on Monday. The amount for ex-gratia may go up to Rs 5 lakh on the basis of Deputy Commissioner’s report.

The State Government also announced Rs l lakh each to the seriously injured and Rs 20,000 to those who sustained minor injuries.
