Guwahati: Ten opposition political parties of Manipur have written to the Governor to arrange for a meeting with the prime minister as they feel that the peace committee set up by the government has not done any visible work to restore peace and the situation in Manipur, which has been facing ethnic violence for the past six months, continues to be tense.

Leaders of AAP, AIFB, AITC, CPI, CPI(M), INC, JDU, NCP, RSP and SS (LBT), in a memorandum to Manipur Governor, Anusuiya Uikey, said that the ongoing conflict in Manipur has caused huge loss of lives, properties, and displacement of more than 60,000 people belonging to both the Meitei and Kuki communities. The living condition of the internally displaced people in relief camps is inhuman and far from satisfactory, they stated.

There have been instances of sporadic killings, firing, and kidnapping of people, including students, as a result of which people have been facing a lot of tension, uncertainty and untold hardships, especially those living on the periphery/borders between the hills and valleys. The social and economic lives of all sections of society have been disrupted. There is still a lot of mistrust among the people, they stated.

The memorandum stated that the Peace Committee constituted by the Union Government has not done any visible work to restore peace and harmony in Manipur. Considering the complexities of the conflict in the state, a viable solution to the conflict can only be brought about by the Union Government.

“We consider that the prime minister is the only hope for bringing peace in the state. Leaders of the ten political parties mentioned herein have resolved to approach you to facilitate a meeting of all political parties in Manipur with the prime minister to find a solution to the conflict under his leadership and guidance.”
