TDP expels Adikesavulu Naidu for defying party whip

After initial hesitation, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) today expelled its Lok Sabha member D K Adikesavulu Naidu who defied the party's whip during the voting on the UPA government's confidence motion.

HYDERABAD: After initial hesitation, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) on Friday expelled its Lok Sabha member D K Adikesavulu Naidu who defied the party's whip during the voting on the UPA government's confidence motion.

The expulsion was announced by party president N Chandrababu Naidu in Nalgonda district even as confusion surrounded the MP's voting.

While the MP from Chittoor claimed that he had voted against the confidence motion, the reports suggested that he wanted to change his preference after casting the vote.

The party viewed his behaviour in the House seriously and initially said it was seeking an explanation from him.

"We have gathered that Adikesavulu Naidu was hobnobbing with Congress MPs and even met Prime Minister after the trust vote. By his actions, he has belittled the party's prestige and violated discipline," the TDP Chief said.

The party had already expelled another MP M Jagannatham from Nagarkurnool on the same issue.

While swift action was initiated against Jagannatham, the party appeared to hesitate to take similar action against Adikesavulu Naidu.

Following criticism that it was applying different yardsticks for the two MPs, the TDP today decided to expel the Chittoor MP.

"What he did was wrong. The party has to maintain discipline at all costs and treat everyone equally," Naidu said.

Earlier in the day, the TDP's Chittoor district unit adopted an unanimous resolution seeking expulsion of Adikesavulu Naidu.

However, the controversial MP, a liquor baron, said he has sent his resignation letter to the party chief on July 23 itself.
