Tata offers help to flood-hit Bihar

Tata Steel today said it has formed a task force to carry out relief and rehabilitation activities in the flood-affected areas of Bihar.

NEW DELHI: Tata Steel today said it has formed a task force to carry out relief and rehabilitation activities in the flood-affected areas of Bihar. "A task force has been formed by the company under the leadership of Corporate Relations Chief Rituraj. The seven member team consists of committed officials, who will monitor and co-ordinate the relief work till the time it is required," the company said in statement here today.

India's largest private sector steel company along with the Tata Relief Committee will construct 50 semi-permanent relief shelters in the flood-hit areas. The construction process is expected to start within a weeks time, the statement said.

"As one of the first corporate houses to come forward pro-actively, Tata Steel is willing to participate in the process of resettling the flood victims in all possible ways along with the Tata Relief Committee," it added. The transportation of materials such as Tata Shaktee sheets and Tata MS pipes worth several crores of rupees required for building shelters are being despatched, it said.

About 100 of the company's employees have volunteered to travel to the affected site and lend a helping hand in relief activities. Tata Relief Committee is operated by the Tata group of companies in Jamshedpur and it has always extended a helping hand in major disasters, including the Gujarat earthquake, the Tsunami and the cyclone in Orissa in the recent past.

Last month, terming the floods in Bihar as a "national calamity," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had announced Rs 1,000 crore aid and 1.25 lakh tonnes of foodgrains for lakhs of people reeling under an unprecedented deluge caused by river Kosi.
