Taslima wants French award in India
Exiled Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen has said she would be happy if the Simone de Beauvoir award is conferred on her by French President Nicolas Sarkozy during his India visit.

KOLKATA: Exiled Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen on Wednesday said she would have been happy if the Simone de Beauvoir award was conferred on her by French President Nicolas Sarkozy during his visit to India.
''I will be very happy if the French award is conferred on me here during the President's visit,'' Taslima said when contacted but refused to comment on the Centre's disfavouring the proposal by the French authorities.
The writer, who is staying at an undisclosed location in Delhi after she was packed off from Kolkata on November 21 after violence here following a demand for cancellation of her visa, said ''I don't think there will be any problem if the award is conferred in India.''
Asked specifically if there could be protests from Muslims if the award was conferred on her in India, Taslima said ''I don't think so. Why will there be problems when I consider India my own country?''
Taslima said the award was instituted in memory of the legendary feminist writer who had championed women's rights.
