Taslima to get appropriate security in India: Home Ministry

NEW DELHI: The Centre on Friday dismissed reports that it had asked the West Bengal government to move controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen out of the state and asserted that she would get appropriate security wherever she was.

"No instruction was given to the West Bengal government to move out Taslima Nasreen," a Union Home Ministry spokesman today said.

He said since the Bangladesh writer had a valid Indian visa till February 17, 2008, she would get appropriate security wherever she was.

If necessary, the ministry will speak to the state governments concerned to ensure that she gets adequate protection, he said.

The ministry was keeping a watch on the situation arising out of protests by a Muslim group - All India Milli Council - seeking cancellation of her visa.

Nasreen was brought to Jaipur after protests by the group in Kolkata demanding her deportation turned violent on Wednesday, forcing the West Bengal government to call out the army to quell largescale violence. From Jaipur, she headed for the national capital.
