GUWAHATI: Assam government has sought inclusion of jailed Ulfa general secretary, Anup Chetia, in the ongoing peace talks between the Centre and protalk Ulfa faction.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said the state government has all along been pursuing the Centre for repatriation of Chetia and now since he has been repatriated, he (Anup Chetia) should be associated with the ongoing peace talks between the government and the protalk faction of Ulfa.

He added, "Ulfa general secretary Anup Chetia is an important figure in the context of peace talks and the state government believes that he can play a decisive role in the ongoing peace process. Chetia has been extradited. His service should be utilised to achieve a breakthrough in the ongoing peace talks."

Leaders of protalk faction on Wednesday met Chetia in Guwahati jail. After a meeting with him, chairman of protalk faction Arbinda Rajkhowa claimed that Chetia will join the peace process.
