Tarun Gogoi questions silence of PM Modi pertaining to rape allegation against Rajen Gohain

GUWAHATI: Former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday questioned the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi pertaining to the allegation of rape against Union minister of state for railways Rajen Gohain.

Police in Assam registered a case of alleged rape against the minister.

The case also includes cheating and criminal intimidation. The woman who filed complaint later sought withdrawal of FIR. However, police is still doing the investigation.


The woman filed FIR on August 2 alleging that minister has been sexually exploiting her for last eight months and had promised her job.

Police, however, stated that they have no powers to decide withdrawal of the case. The matter will be decided by the court.

Local televisions aired telephonic conversation calming Gohain threatening the husband of the complainant with dire consequences for going to police.

Gogoi said, “Modi talks about ‘Beti bachao’. However, it has come to the fore that we need to save our daughters from BJP leaders. How can the Railway passengers feel safe when the Minister is involved in rape,” said Gogoi while talking to newsmen on Tuesday.

Mahila Congress protested against the minister in Guwahati. Lok Sabha MP from Silchar and president of All India Mahila Congress Sushmita Deb asked the minister to immediately step down.

She said that Gohain must step down and inquiry must start against him. “Gohain is using power to silence the complainant.”
