Targeting the council polls, BJP to strengthen base in Bodoland

The sixth scheduled area of Indian constitution, Bodoland Territorial Areas Districts (BTAD) is going to polls to early next year. BPF is ruling the council since 2005.

In recently held Lok Sabha election the BJP has left the Kokrajhar parliamentary seat to BPF. However Parmila Rani Brahma BPF candidate lost to sitting MP and independent candidate Naba Sarania.
GUWAHATI: In the stronghold of its ally, Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF) in Bodoland, BJP has decided to strengthen its base.

The sixth scheduled area of Indian constitution, Bodoland Territorial Areas Districts (BTAD) is going to polls to early next year. BPF is ruling the council since 2005.

BJP president Rajit Kumar Dass on Thursday met BJP leaders from the four districts of BTAD—Kokrajhar, Baksa, Chirang and Udalguri.


He asked the leaders to start party activities and strengthen the party’s base.

Kihor Upadhaya secretary of Assam unit of the BJP said, “We held a fruitful meeting with the president of state BJP today. We are told to start activities in the districts ahead of the BTC polls early next year. All the district unit presidents in four BTAD districts have been asked to convene an executive body meeting on August 25.”

He added, “The party leadership has also extended the membership drive of the BJP in BTAD districts till September 7 and the party leaders are asked to ensure at least 5000 new membership in each of the 40 constituencies under the BTAD.”

In recently held Lok Sabha election the BJP has left the Kokrajhar parliamentary seat to BPF. However Parmila Rani Brahma BPFcandidate lost to sitting MP and independent candidate Naba Sarania.

In 2006 and 2011 BPF was part of the congress led government in Assam, in 2014 before Lok Sabha polls the party parted ways from congress.

BPF has romped back to power in council winning 20 out of 40 seats in 2015. BJP in last election opened their accounts in the Council with one seats. BJP had contested all the 40 seats.
