COLOMBO: The Tamil Tigers on Sunday officially acknowledged that their leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran, was killed a week ago by Sri Lankan government troops, according to a statement from the rebels.

"We announce today with inexpressible sadness and heavy hearts that our incomparable leader, the supreme commander of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), attained martyrdom fighting the Sri Lankan government military operation," said the rebels' chief of international relations, Selvarasa Pathmanathan.

The LTTE leader said Prabhakaran had died on May 17 but did not give details of the circumstances, it reported.

The statement is the first time the LTTE have admitted the death of Prabhakaran.

Pathmanathan said the Tigers would now use "non-violent" methods to fight for the rights of Tamils.
