Tamil student thrashed in Bengaluru over Facebook post
CHENNAI: Political leaders in Tamil Nadu across party lines condemned the attack on an engineering student in Bengaluru by a group of people for allegedly posting derogatory remarks on social media against Kannada film actors for their participation in the protests over the Cauvery water dispute.

Local police said that the incident took place on Saturday near the college where the 22-year old was studying.

A video showing the boy being thrashed by several men went viral on the Internet and was also telecast by local channels in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. AIADMK spokesperson C R Saraswathi told TOI, "Violence is not the solution. People of both states have to face issues in a compassionate manner." DMK MP and party spokesperson T K S Elangovan urged the Karnataka government to take legal action against the assailants.

Condemning the incident, Union minister of state for road transport, highways and shipping, Pon Radhakrishnan, and MDMK chief Vaiko said Karnataka government should extend protection to Tamil people in that state.

Cauvery washes out Kannada lit event

Activists of Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (TPDK) barged into the venue of a Kannada literary meet at Huzur Road in Coimbatore on Sunday and got it cancelled. The activists said they wouldn't allow the meet when there were protests against Tamil Nadu in Karnataka on the Cauvery river row. Police rushed to the spot and removed the activists. But the organizers chose to end the meet. About 50 writers had participated in the event.
