Tamil Nadu's cases rise dramatically to breach 70,000 mark

Active cases in the state have reached 30,064 as six major districts in the State, including the State capital have been under complete lockdown.

Chennai continues to be the worst affected district in the State with 47650 cases in all and 1834 of which were on Thursday. The district has seen 694 deaths so far.
CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu saw a massive spike in cases with 3,509 patients testing positive for Covid-19 in the state on Thursday, taking the total count to 70,977.

Active cases in the state have reached 30,064 as six major districts in the State, including the State capital have been under complete lockdown.

The death toll too has touched 911 after 45 more people succumbing to the infection on Thursday.


Of the fresh cases reported, 20 patients who arrived in Tamil Nadu from abroad tested positive in the state. Further, 131 passengers who arrived from other Indian states too tested positive in the state.

As many as 39,999 have been discharged from the hospitals after fully recovering from the virus. The recoveries also include 2,236 new recoveries on Thursday alone.

There are 88 Covid-19 testing facilities in Tamil Nadu of which 41 are private while the rest belong to the government.

According to the media bulletin, a total of 32,543 samples were tested on Thursday. Over 10 lakh samples have been tested for the virus lakh till date.

Last Saturday, 33,231 samples were tested, which is the highest number of Covid-19 tests conducted in a single day in Tamil Nadu.
