Tamil Nadu reports over 6,785 Covid-19 positive cases in highest single-day spike

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu's daily Covid-19 count touched 6,785 on Friday, the highest so far. However, testing too was at an all-time high with 63,182 people being tested, the State bulletin confirmed.

This comes a day after the State reported an all-time high on Thursday with 6472 people testing positive for Covid-19. The death toll rose to 3320 on Friday with 88 more people succumbed to the infection.

Chennai reported a marginal drop in cases with 1299 people testing positive on Friday as opposed to 1336 people on Thursday. Other districts in the State continued to report spikes in numbers.


Chengalpet and Virudhunagar reported over 400 cases while Kancheepuram, Madurai, Thiruvallur and Tuticorin had more than 300 cases on Friday. Kanyakumari, Ranipet, Theni and Trichy had more than 200 cases on the same day.

Further, on Friday the Coimbatore collector announced a total lockdown from 5pm on Saturday till 6am on Monday in the district where only emergency services will function.

With this surge, the total tally of cases that Tamil Nadu is inching towards the 2 lakh mark. As of now, the state has witnessed 199,749 cases.

However, in line with the State's aggressive testing strategy, the highest number of people were tested on Thursday. As many as 60,375 persons were tested for Covid-19 on Thursday.

As many as 6504 patients were discharged on Friday taking the tally of recoveries to 143,297.
