With this surge, the total tally of cases that Tamil Nadu has witnessed stands at 192,964 cases.
CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu's daily Covid-19 count on Thursday breached the 6,000 mark for the first time with 6472 people testing positive for the infection, the State bulletin confirmed.

This comes a day after the State reported an all-time high on Wednesday with 5849 people testing positive for Covid-19. Further, 444 deaths were added to the tally which was the reconciled figure from March 1st to June 10th which were first thought to be due to other causes but now attributed to coronavirus, the Health Minister Dr C Vijayabaskar said on Wednesday.

On Thursday, 88 people succumbed to the infection taking the death toll to 3232.


Chennai which has been the worst affected district so far had been quite flat for around two weeks but recorded a marginal rise on Thursday with 1336 people testing positive for the infection. On Wednesday, the state capital reported 1171 cases. Other districts in the State continued to report spikes in numbers.

Thiruvallur, Tuticorin and Virudhunagar recorded over 400 cases while Chengalpet and Kancheepuram had more than 300 cases. Coimbatore, Madurai, Ranipet and Tirunelveli reported over 200 cases.

With this surge, the total tally of cases that Tamil Nadu has witnessed stands at 192,964 cases.

However, in line with the State's aggressive testing strategy, the highest number of people were tested on Thursday. As many as 60,375 persons were tested for Covid-19 on Thursday.

Further, 5210 patients were discharged on Thursday taking the tally of recoveries to 136,793.
